Berks farmers cultivate customers in Philadelphia and other areas

Going To Market
On a recent morning, Mary Hill and her husband, Bart, loaded up a van at their Perry Township farm and headed to Philadelphia.
The Hills made three stops, dropping off meat, eggs and cheese to customers in the Delaware Valley.
Like their agrarian ancestors, the Hills’ trip to Philadelphia was just another example of farmers bringing their goods to market.
But unlike today’s complicated food system — in which farm-grown food travels an average of 1,500 miles to get to a grocery store— the Hills are separated by fewer than 100 miles from their customers.
“You really don’t know what you are buying when you go to the grocery store,” she said.
